Overwatch 2 Tank Tier List for Ranked Role Queue
Tank heroes ranked S to C for Role Queue, with the criteria used, the best tanks for each map type, and counter-swap notes for common matchups.

Written from the hero roster and balance as known up to late 2025; balance patches move tiers and heroes released since then are not ranked here, so check the current patch notes before treating any placement as final.
In 5v5 Role Queue there is one tank per team, so the tank pick decides how the whole team has to play: where it stands, how fast it moves and which enemies it can reach. That also makes the tank the most counter-picked role. This list ranks tanks by how well they hold up under those conditions, then shows which ones suit each map type and what to swap to when a matchup turns against you.
How the tiers were judged
- Space on their own. Can the tank force enemies off a position without the team already winning?
- Survivability. How long does the tank live when supports are busy or dead?
- Resistance to counter-picks. How many common enemy picks shut the hero down, and how badly?
- Map range. On how many maps and modes is the pick comfortable?
- Ultimate reliability. Does the ultimate win fights by itself, or only with follow-up?
Tiers describe the hero in the hands of a competent player in solo queue. A tank you have hundreds of hours on beats a higher-tier tank you picked up yesterday.
The tier table
| Tier | Hero | Why it sits here |
|---|---|---|
| S | D.Va | Defense Matrix deletes burst damage and ultimates, boosters reach any high ground, and she can dive or protect her backline in the same fight. |
| S | Winston | His jump chooses where the fight happens, the barrier splits enemies from their healing, and Primal Rage stalls any objective. |
| S | Sigma | Barrier and Kinetic Grasp win long-range fights, and his rock interrupts whoever jumps on him; the safest tank on open maps. |
| A | Ramattra | Two forms cover both poke and brawl, and his punches ignore barriers; slow to reach enemies who run. |
| A | Zarya | Barriers turn enemy mistakes into charge and save a teammate from a dive; no mobility and no vertical reach. |
| A | Junker Queen | Her shout starts a brawl with speed and extra health, and her ultimate denies healing; with no damage mitigation she leans on her supports. |
| A | Orisa | Fortify shrugs off crowd control and Javelin interrupts key abilities; very hard to kill but creates little space. |
| A | Hazard | Leap, wall and block make him a brawl and dive hybrid; strong in close quarters, average against long-range poke. |
| B | Reinhardt | Still the best tank in tight corridors, with a fight-winning Earthshatter; kited and poked out on open maps. |
| B | Doomfist | Enormous mobility and disruption, but one stun or hack ends his engage and the hero takes long practice. |
| B | Wrecking Ball | Unmatched at stalling and dragging attention away; his team has to fight without a frontline. |
| B | Mauga | Burns tanks down at close range and sustains through damage dealt; a huge hitbox that collapses under anti-heal. |
| C | Roadhog | A landed hook is often a won fight, but he protects nobody and feeds the enemy ultimate charge. |
Tanks by map type
The mode sets the shape of the fights; the map’s geometry then confirms or overrides it.
| Mode | Strong tanks | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Winston, D.Va, Wrecking Ball, Reinhardt | Small points and constant re-fights favour tanks that return fast and contest; Reinhardt on enclosed points. |
| Escort | Sigma, Orisa, Ramattra | Long lanes around the payload reward range, barriers and holding a choke for a long time. |
| Hybrid | Reinhardt, Zarya, Ramattra, then Sigma | The first point sits behind a choke, which suits brawl; the payload phase plays like Escort. |
| Push | Junker Queen, Winston, D.Va, Wrecking Ball | Fights roam along a long route with many flanks, so speed and fast regrouping matter more than holding ground. |
| Flashpoint | D.Va, Wrecking Ball, Doomfist, Winston | The largest maps with points far apart: whoever rotates first takes the better position. |
Two corrections to apply on top of the table:
- High ground decides more than the mode. If the key position is above you, take a tank that can get there (D.Va, Winston, Doomfist, Hazard, Sigma to a degree).
- Attack and defence differ. A defending Sigma or Orisa holds a long lane that the same hero would struggle to break on attack, where Winston or D.Va gets past it.
Counter-swap notes
| Problem | Swap to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Enemy Zarya while you play D.Va | Sigma or Ramattra | Her beam ignores Defense Matrix; fight from outside beam range and stop feeding her charge. |
| Enemy D.Va diving your supports | Zarya | A barrier on the dived ally, and a beam she cannot absorb. |
| Enemy Winston or other dive tank | D.Va or Zarya | Both can protect a support the moment the dive lands. |
| Enemy Reinhardt | Ramattra or Orisa | Ramattra punches through his barrier; Orisa stops the charge and stands through Earthshatter with Fortify. |
| Enemy Doomfist or Wrecking Ball | Orisa, Sigma or Roadhog | Each has an interrupt that ends the engage. |
| Enemy Mauga or Roadhog | D.Va or Sigma | Both absorb their main damage; ask a support for Ana’s anti-heal as well. |
| Enemy Sigma on a long lane | Winston or D.Va | Go past the barrier instead of trading into it. |
| Enemy Orisa | Zarya or Winston | Zarya’s beam ignores her defences; Winston skips her and kills the backline. |
Threats from the other roles to keep in mind:
- Ana punishes large tanks with no way to block the grenade: Roadhog, Mauga, Winston in Primal Rage.
- Sombra takes the mobility from Wrecking Ball and Doomfist at the worst moment.
- Reaper and Bastion make Winston’s close-range dives expensive.
- Zenyatta makes any tank without a barrier or matrix die quickly.
Swapping has a price: you lose ultimate charge and a fight’s worth of rhythm. Give a matchup two fights, change your angle or target first, and swap only if the same thing kills you again.
