Written from the state of the game at the Season 16 launch patch (April 2025); the Stadium roster, the ban rules and Freja’s tuning have all been patched since, so check the current in-game values before relying on any detail here.
Season 16 split Overwatch 2 into two ranked games. One is the Competitive you know, now with a ban phase before every match. The other is Stadium, a round-based mode with a shop, permanent builds and its own ladder. Add a new damage hero and you have a patch where the right question is not “who got buffed” but “which mode am I queuing, and what does it ask of me”.
What actually changed
- Stadium, a new core mode. Two teams of five, role-locked, play a best-of-seven series of short rounds. Between rounds you spend Stadium Cash in the Armory on items, and on set rounds you choose a Power, a build-defining upgrade. The camera is third-person by default, with a first-person option.
- No hero swaps in Stadium. You pick a hero at the start and build that hero for the whole series.
- A limited Stadium roster. The mode launched with 17 heroes, not the full cast, and has its own ranked ladder separate from Competitive.
- Freja, a new damage hero: a mobile crossbow hunter with rapid-fire bolts, a heavier aimed explosive shot, a dash, an upward leap and an ultimate that pulls enemies together.
- Hero bans in Competitive. Before the match each player nominates heroes to remove. Each team ends up removing two, so four heroes are unavailable to both sides, with a limit on how many can come from one role.
| Competitive (with bans) | Stadium | |
|---|---|---|
| Match shape | One map, the usual objectives | Best of seven short rounds |
| Hero choice | Swap freely, minus four banned heroes | One hero, locked for the series |
| Power growth | Perks from levelling | Powers and items bought with Stadium Cash |
| Camera | First-person | Third-person by default |
| Roster | Everyone not banned | A limited list (17 at launch) |
| Rank | Competitive ladder | Separate Stadium ladder |
The launch roster in Stadium, for reference:
| Role | Heroes available at launch |
|---|---|
| Tank | D.Va, Junker Queen, Orisa, Reinhardt, Zarya |
| Damage | Ashe, Cassidy, Genji, Mei, Reaper, Soldier: 76 |
| Support | Ana, Juno, Kiriko, Lúcio, Mercy, Moira |
Winners and losers
A reading of what the patch rewards, not a win-rate chart.
| Who | Why | |
|---|---|---|
| Winner | Players with three or more heroes per role | A ban costs them a preference, not their match |
| Winner | Anyone tired of one specific hero | Four bans per match remove the most resented picks; Sombra was the community’s first target |
| Winner | Poke and high-ground damage players | Freja rewards aim and vertical movement and punishes slow, grounded teams |
| Winner | Players who enjoy planning a build | Stadium pays for knowing an economy, not only for mechanics |
| Loser | One-tricks | A single nomination from the enemy can take their hero away |
| Loser | Heroes that are annoying more than they are strong | They get banned for how they feel to play against |
| Loser | Counter-swap specialists in Stadium | With no swaps, a bad matchup has to be solved with items |
| Loser | Mains of heroes missing from the Stadium roster | They must learn someone new to play the mode at all |
What it means for each role
Tank
In Competitive, expect the tank that hard-counters you to be available less often, and expect yours to be removed sometimes: keep a second tank of a different style ready, one brawler and one dive or poke pick. In Stadium the tank decides how rounds are fought, and because the enemy tank cannot change, you can plan a whole series of purchases against one known opponent.
Damage
Freja adds a threat that plays above the fight. If the enemy has her and nobody on your team can contest high ground or hitscan her out of the air, the fight is played on her terms. In Stadium, damage heroes scale hardest with money, so staying alive and earning steadily beats one flashy round followed by an empty wallet.
Support
Supports are frequent ban targets, so a pool of three is the minimum for a climb. Against Freja, long sight lines are dangerous: her aimed shot punishes a support standing still in the open. In Stadium, decide early whether your build is healing or damage; a half-and-half build does neither well by the later rounds.
What to do differently in your next ranked session
- Set your ban nominations with a purpose. Remove what beats your own hero or your team’s plan, not simply what irritates you.
- Tell your team who you want to play during the ban phase, so nobody removes a teammate’s pick.
- Queue with three heroes per role warmed up, not one.
- Learn Stadium on one hero. Play several series on a single pick until you know its Powers, then widen.
- In Stadium, buy to answer the enemy. They cannot swap, so every counter-item you buy stays useful until the series ends.
- Do not judge Stadium by the first two rounds. Builds come online late; a team that is behind early is not out.
- Against Freja, take the high ground first or bring a hero who can reach it.
Bottom line
Season 16 rewards breadth in Competitive and depth in Stadium. Widen your pool for the ban phase, pick one hero to master in the new mode, and treat the two ladders as different games that happen to share a cast.
