Ana Hero Guide: Abilities, Positioning and Nano Boost Targets

Written from the state of the game as of early 2026; cooldowns, perks and hero balance change every season, so check the in-game values before relying on exact numbers.

Ana is the support with the highest ceiling and the lowest margin for error. She heals from further away than anyone, shuts down enemy healing with one cooldown and removes an ultimate from the fight with another, but she has no movement ability at all. Almost every Ana death is decided before the fight starts, by where she chose to stand and which cooldown she had already spent.

Abilities and what each one is for

Biotic Rifle

One weapon, two modes. Scoped shots land instantly; unscoped shots are projectiles with travel time. The same dart heals an ally or damages an enemy over a short duration.

  • Scope for long sightlines and for targets that move unpredictably.
  • Stay unscoped in close fights: you keep your field of view and your movement speed, and you see the flanker coming.
  • Shots pass through full-health allies, so a healthy tank does not block the dart meant for the teammate behind them.
  • Damage matters. Two or three darts into a target your team is already shooting ends fights faster than topping up a tank who is not in danger.

Sleep Dart

Your only answer to someone on top of you, and your tool for cancelling ultimates. Any damage wakes the target, so a slept enemy is only a kill if your team stops shooting stray bullets and commits together. It has the longest cooldown in your kit: once you miss, you are the easiest support on the field to kill until it returns.

Biotic Grenade

The strongest basic ability in most fights. On allies it heals instantly and increases the healing they receive; on enemies it blocks all healing for a few seconds. One grenade can do both at once in a close brawl.

Nano Boost

Instantly heals the target, increases their damage and reduces the damage they take. It is cast on a teammate in your line of sight, so it also works as an emergency save, although that is the least valuable way to spend it.

Positioning

Ana plays one step behind the rest of the team and one step to the side, never in the middle of the main lane.

  • Stand next to cover, not near it. A corner you can step behind in half a second is worth more than high ground with no exit.
  • Keep your tank and your other support in view. If you can see both, they can see you, and that is your peel.
  • Prefer long angles. Distance is your only armour; a dive hero who has to cross open ground gives you time to react.
  • Rotate after each fight. A flanker who finds you in the same spot twice will not miss the second time.
  • High ground with a drop-off behind it is the ideal: you see everything and can fall out of sight.

Sleep Dart and Biotic Grenade targets

Good Sleep Dart targets, in priority order:

  1. A hero diving you or your other support.
  2. A channelled or transformation ultimate that is already active.
  3. A tank who has overextended with no shield or damage-reduction ability left.
  4. A flanker who has already used their escape.

Do not open a fight by throwing Sleep Dart at a distant target for value. The dive that follows will find you with nothing.

The Biotic Grenade is a choice between three uses, and holding it for the right one wins more fights than throwing it on cooldown:

  • Offensive: on the enemy tank as they commit, or on a group standing together. Tanks that rely on self-healing or on being pocketed fall apart under anti-heal.
  • Defensive: on yourself and the ground at your feet when you are dived. It heals you and stops the attacker being healed.
  • Amplifying: on your own tank when the whole enemy team is shooting them and your other support is healing too.

Remember that some abilities cleanse or block the effect. If the enemy has Kiriko, wait for her Protection Suzu before you throw the grenade that is supposed to decide the fight; Zarya bubbles and Defense Matrix deny it outright.

Nano Boost targets

Target Why it works Use it when
Genji Turns his ultimate into fast, reliable kills He has his ultimate ready and enemy stuns or immortality tools are spent
Reinhardt A close-range tank who can now walk through the enemy front line The fight is in a corridor or on the objective
Winston His dive becomes impossible to ignore, and his ultimate lasts through anything The enemy backline is exposed and your team follows
Ramattra Long uptime in melee range and built-in damage reduction stacks with yours He enters Nemesis Form or uses his ultimate
Soldier: 76 Consistent ranged damage with no setup The enemy plays in the open, especially with his ultimate
Reaper Close-range burst that also heals him He has flanked and the enemy has no stun ready
Any ally at low health The instant heal and damage reduction save them Losing that player loses the fight

Two rules matter more than the table. Say it before you press it, so the target actually goes in. And boost a teammate who is about to act, not one who is retreating.

Matchups against dive heroes

Hero What they want Your answer
Winston Jump on you, drop his barrier, cleave both supports Walk out of the barrier, sleep him after he lands, grenade yourself and him
D.Va Fly in and absorb your cooldowns with Defense Matrix Hold sleep and grenade until Matrix is down or she faces away
Wrecking Ball Knock you out of position and disrupt Stay near a wall; sleep him as he comes out of the slam
Doomfist Burst you with a punch from an angle Do not stand with a wall directly behind you; sleep him after he lands
Genji Dash in, deflect your dart, finish you Do not shoot sleep into Deflect; wait it out, then sleep
Tracer Chip you down and recall away Grenade yourself, shoot unscoped, save sleep for a predictable blink
Sombra Catch you alone from stealth Stand with a teammate, turn and fight immediately, call it out

Common mistakes

  • Sleeping for value, then dying to the dive. Track which enemies can reach you and keep the dart for them.
  • Healing only the tank. Tunnel vision on one health bar loses your damage heroes and your own damage.
  • Staying scoped. You stop seeing flankers and you move slowly.
  • Throwing the grenade the moment it is ready. A grenade held for three seconds often decides the fight; one thrown at full-health enemies does nothing.
  • Saving Nano Boost for a perfect combination. Used in two fights out of three, it is worth more than a perfect one you never get.
  • Standing in the open because the healing is easier from there. Dead Ana heals nobody.
