IS-7 guide: armour use, equipment, crew skills and positions

Written from the state of the game as known to the author in mid-2026; equipment, crew skill and field modification details change with updates, so check the in-game values before relying on them.

The IS-7 is the tier X heavy at the end of the classic Soviet line: a fast, low, well-armoured brawler with a hard-hitting 130 mm gun that is clumsy to aim. It rewards players who think about what part of the tank the enemy can see, and punishes those who treat it as a sniper or as an invulnerable wall.

Role in a battle

The IS-7 is a frontline assault heavy. It reaches the key corner or ridge early thanks to its speed, holds it with turret and side armour, and then pushes once the enemy is worn down. It does not win long damage races: its reload is slow for the tier, so every exchange must be one where you take nothing, or a bounce, in return.

Strengths Weaknesses
Very strong turret front, small weak spots Poor accuracy and long aim time
High top speed for a heavy Slow reload, low damage per minute
Strong alpha damage per shot Limited gun depression
Spaced armour on the upper side eats HEAT shells Lower plate and angled pike nose are easy to penetrate
Low silhouette, hard to hit over cover Frontal hits can damage the ammo rack and fuel tanks

Using the armour

The pike nose

The upper front hull is two plates meeting in a point. Each plate is already steeply angled when you face the enemy head-on. Turn the hull even a little and one of the plates becomes flat to the gun aimed at it. The rule is simple: when the front hull is visible, point it straight at the gun that matters, and wiggle only a few degrees.

Sidescraping

A classic forward sidescrape exposes the pike nose, so the IS-7 does it differently:

  • Prefer the reverse sidescrape: park with the rear toward the corner and back out, so the nose never appears.
  • Show only the side, at a very sharp angle. The upper side is spaced armour; the lower side behind the tracks is thinner, so keep the angle tight.
  • Pull back fully while reloading. The reload is long enough for the enemy to wait for you.
  • Do not sidescrape against high-calibre guns that can ignore angling on the thinner plates; hide the hull completely instead.

Hull-down

The turret is the best armour on the tank, but the gun does not depress far. Steep ridges that suit American or British heavies leave the IS-7 unable to aim down. Look instead for:

  • shallow rises and road embankments,
  • rubble piles and destroyed tanks that cover the lower plate and nose,
  • slopes where you sit facing uphill, the hull hidden by the ground in front.

Keep the turret moving slightly while you wait for the reload; the roof and the area near the gun are the only places opponents can hope for.

Equipment build

Slot Recommended Why Alternative
1 Gun Rammer The reload is the tank’s main limit None; always fit it
2 Vertical Stabilizer Shrinks the aiming circle on the move, which the gun badly needs None; always fit it
3 Improved Hardening More hit points and tougher tracks for brawling Improved Ventilation for all-round handling; Turbocharger if you want to reach positions first
Flex Improved Rotation Mechanism Tightens dispersion while turning hull and turret Take it in slot 3 if aiming frustrates you more than survivability

Put the equipment that matches the slot category of the tank into that slot to get the bonus. Consumables: a repair kit, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher is the safe set, because hits to the front can start fires; experienced players swap the first aid kit or the extinguisher for a food consumable.

Crew skill order

The crew is a commander (who also works the radio), a gunner, a driver and two loaders.

Order Commander Gunner Driver Loaders
1 Repairs Repairs Repairs Repairs
2 Brothers in Arms Brothers in Arms Brothers in Arms Brothers in Arms
3 Jack of All Trades Snap Shot Smooth Ride Safe Stowage
4 Recon Armorer Clutch Braking Adrenaline Rush

Repairs come first because a tracked IS-7 with its side exposed is dead. If the crew is experienced enough to reset skills, take Brothers in Arms first and Repairs second. Snap Shot and Smooth Ride are the two that directly ease the gun handling.

Field modifications

Field modifications are small paired trade-offs unlocked with the tank’s own experience. The exact pairs differ per tank and have been rebalanced over time, so no specific choices are listed here. The principle for the IS-7: wherever a pair offers gun handling or dispersion in exchange for something secondary such as view range or concealment, take the gun handling.

Positions by map type

Map type Where to go What to avoid
City (Himmelsdorf, Ruinberg, Ensk) The main heavy street; arrive first, reverse sidescrape at the corner Long open avenues watched by tank destroyers
Mixed with a heavy corridor The corridor with hard cover and wrecks to use as hull-down Flanks that need gun depression over ridges
Open (Prokhorovka, Malinovka) Second line behind the scouts, then push late through the area with the most cover Early pushes across fields; sniping duels
Hilly The low ground under the hill, using shallow rises Fighting from the crest against hull-down tanks

Common mistakes

  1. Angling the front hull like a tank with a flat plate.
  2. Sniping from the base with a gun that is not built for it.
  3. Peeking over steep ridges and showing the lower plate before the gun can aim.
  4. Trading shot for shot with faster-firing heavies instead of bouncing first.
  5. Staying in the open after firing; use the speed to relocate when a flank falls.
  6. Leaving the fire extinguisher at home.
